Community Campaign
The Folic Acid Community Campaign is a public education campaign that is managed by the Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) Program and sponsored by the Family, Maternal & Child Health Programs of Contra Costa Health Services with support from the March of Dimes and the USDA, California Nutrition Network. The goal of this project is to raise awareness of folic acid and it's role in preventing birth defects of the brain and spine. The campaign consists of the following key components:
- Collaborative efforts: The FIMR Program collaborated with several programs and community-based agencies on the design and implementation of the campaign.
- Media activities: Media activities included on-screen theater advertising in three local movie theaters, transit advertising, mailings to food stamp recipients, local cable TV shows and advertising, and a project website.
- Provider trainings: Folic acid trainings have been conducted for public health nurses, community health workers, nutrition staff, public health interpreters, health educators and other health care providers.
- Educational materials and incentives: A series of educational materials has been developed, including folic acid brochures in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Farsi and Laotian and a magnet, mailer/bookmark, flyer and fact sheet in English and Spanish.
